Although prices have dropped considerably for the majority of electric vehicles currently available on the market, consumers are still calling for more accessible models. Some automakers are turning a deaf ear, while others, like Ford, have decided to focus on finding a solution.

It all begins with the new universal platform unveiled last year. This architecture will serve as the foundation for several new models over the next four years, allowing the automaker to spread development costs across multiple vehicles.

Strength in Numbers

Not only is Ford focusing on diversity with several small and affordable vehicles, but the American automaker is also targeting mass production for these upcoming models. The goal is no longer simply to offer electric vehicles to follow the trend, but rather to meet the demand of millions of consumers who are eager to purchase a more affordable fully electric model.

Another key aspect for the brand is the ability to develop smaller and therefore lighter battery packs. This would help reduce production costs while also significantly lowering vehicle weight.

The possibilities are virtually endless with this new platform. It could serve as the basis for a small pickup truck, several SUVs, a sedan, and potentially even a minivan.

A Significant Action Plan

Ford does not intend to stop at offering more affordable electric models. The American automaker is also working on the development of several hybrid and electric powertrains equipped with range extenders. The brand’s objective is to reach a production mix of 50 percent hybrid, range-extended, or fully electric models by 2030. At present, these three categories account for 17 percent of the company’s total production.
